The Capital Relocation to Nara: From “Ancient Capitals of Asuka and Fujiwara” to Heijo

Heijokyu Izanaikan Museum · Special Exhibition Room · Nara · –

The Nara period began when Empress Genmei proclaimed the move of the capital to Heijō-kyō in 710. The new capital eagerly took up knowledge and techniques from the continent, above all Tang China, while carrying on the culture and traditions formed in the earlier capitals of Asuka and Fujiwara. Marking the new World Heritage inscription of the Asuka-Fujiwara capitals, the Nara National Research Institute for Cultural Properties shows about 50 archaeological items (as planned) excavated at Heijō Palace and Heijō-kyō that relate to palaces and temples of the Asuka and Fujiwara area, to show how the move was carried out. They include Fujiwara-palace-style eave tiles from Heijō Palace, a Sue-ware vessel with an ink inscription, and an incised Sue-ware jar from the site of the Sake Brewing Office.
