The Earthly Paradise of Hangzhou and the Wuyue Kingdom: Buddhist Belief in Artwork

The Museum Yamato Bunkakan · Nara · –

Hangzhou, famous for West Lake, was the capital of the Wuyue Kingdom in the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period and later of the Southern Song. The exhibition looks at Hangzhou as an international centre of culture and follows the Buddhist faith and art that crossed the sea around East Asia. Featured works include one of the 84,000 stupas of the Wuyue king Qian Hongchu (called Ashoka stupas in China) and the Important Cultural Property Record of the Sutra on the Dharani on the Seal of the Precious Chest, both held by Kongō-ji in Osaka. The museum also plans to show two Important Cultural Properties from its own collection: the catalogue of items the monk Jōgyō brought back from China, and the Goryeo celadon Vessel with Design of Nine Dragons.
