Uemura Shōkō: A 25th Memorial Exhibition

Shohaku Museum of Art · Nara · –

Uemura Shōkō (1902–2001), the only son of Uemura Shōen, the first woman to receive the Order of Culture, painted birds and flowers all his life. He taught for 38 years at his alma mater, today's Kyoto City University of Arts, helped found the Sōzō Bijutsu group in 1948 and received the Order of Culture in 1984. For the 25th anniversary of his death, about 130 works and materials held or cared for by the museum, from his early years to his last and including sketches and the elementary-school textbooks he used, shown here for the first time, appear across three periods: among them Pair of Doves (1985, whole run), Moonlit Night (1939, first period) and Spring in the Man'yō Age (1970, first period). Works by Shōen and by Shōkō's son Atsushi are also on special display.
