Craftsmanship and Identity: Embodied Traditions of Life and Costume in Asia’s Ethnic Communities

Tenri University Sankokan Museum · 3F Feature Exhibition Gallery · Nara · –

The exhibition looks at four peoples living mainly between south-western China and the Indochinese peninsula — the Bai, Naxi, Yao and Miao (Hmong) — through their costumes, textiles and everyday objects. The patterns, colours and designs of their embroidery and dyeing carry reverence for nature and each people's history, and express an identity: who we are. Highlights include a Miao "hundred-bird" costume, a Naxi woman's "seven stars" sheepskin back cape, Bai tie-dyed cloth and Dongba scriptures.
