Takaterasu Miyako: The Ancient Capitals of Asuka and Fujiwara in Modern Japanese Painting

Nara Prefecture Complex of Man’yō Culture · Japanese Painting Gallery · Nara · –

A special exhibition for the complex's 25th anniversary and the inscription of the Asuka-Fujiwara sites as World Heritage. Asuka and Fujiwara, the political and cultural centre of Japan from the late sixth to the early eighth century, became a favourite subject once painters took up ancient themes from the late 1880s, drawing on archaeology and history and adding their own imagination. Through works by painters including Yasuda Yukihiko, Hirayama Ikuo and Uemura Shōkō, the exhibition traces how modern and contemporary artists pictured the ancient capitals, a lineage that leads to the museum's own collection of paintings on Man'yōshū themes.
