Van Eyck: The Portraits
National Gallery · London · –
For the first time, all nine of Jan van Eyck's known painted portraits, half of his surviving works, are shown together. The sitters are not kings, queens and aristocrats but successful craftsmen, merchants and the artist's relatives, which the Gallery presents as the moment when access to art widened. The National Gallery's own Portrait of a Man (Self Portrait?) of 1433 is among them.
