Omizutori: The Water-Drawing Rite

Nara National Museum · Nara · –

Tōdai-ji's Shuni-e at the Nigatsu-dō hall, popularly called Omizutori, was begun in 752 by the monk Jicchū; its formal name is the Eleven-Headed Kannon Repentance Rite, and its main rites run from March 1 to 15. This special display at the Nara National Museum presents the ceremony across the museum's collection fields. The title and dates are those in the FY2026 plan of the National Institutes for Cultural Heritage, which runs the museum; check the museum's site for the works on view.
