Commemorating New Acquisitions: The 140th Anniversary of Birth — Works of TOMIMOTO Kenkichi in the Showa Era

Nara Prefectural Museum of Art · Nara · –

Tomimoto Kenkichi (1886–1963), born in what is now Andō in Nara Prefecture, was recognized as a Living National Treasure for overglaze-enamelled porcelain in 1955 and received the Order of Culture in 1961. The museum, which has collected his work since it opened in 1973, received 33 pieces last year from the former collection of his childhood friend, the physician Imamura Arao. In 2026, 100 years after the first year of the Shōwa era, it shows all 33 with works from its own collection and on deposit, about 40 in all, and follows Tomimoto's Shōwa-era work through the crafts of the early Shōwa years, his wartime evacuation to Takayama and the postwar creation of the Important Intangible Cultural Property system.
