Autumn Exhibition: The Allure of Motifs in Modern Painting

Nakano Museum of Art · Nara · –

About 50 works from the collection explore painting motifs: the still lifes and portraits that modern oil painters and printmakers took up in great numbers, and bird-and-flower painting, a traditional East Asian genre in Nihonga. Highlights include Kishida Ryūsei's Head of a Young Man (1918), Koide Narashige's Still Life with Mirror (1919), Hasegawa Kiyoshi's Time: Still Life (1969), Funakoshi Katsura's Water Blue II (1990), Takeuchi Seihō's New Lotus Leaves in Morning Dew (c. 1918, first period) and Tsuchida Bakusen's Birds and Flowers of Spring and Autumn (1923, second period), with 12 of the 16 scrolls Murakami Kagaku painted in 1915 on Liu Xiang's Han-dynasty Biographies of Immortals.
