Nara Prefecture Complex of Man’yō Culture
Asuka · Nara
Address: 10 Asuka, Asuka-mura, Takaichi-gun, Nara 634-0103
Nara Prefecture's centre for the culture of the Man'yōshū, Japan's oldest poetry anthology, opened in Asuka on September 15, 2001 (its 25th anniversary falls in 2026). Excavation before construction found the Asukaike workshop site, now a national Historic Site, which the building preserves and presents. It is known for its collection of Japanese-style paintings on Man'yōshū poems; exhibitions in the Japanese-painting gallery are charged, the other rooms are free. About 20 minutes by the Asuka loop bus (Akakame) from Kintetsu Kashiharajingū-mae (east exit) or Asuka Station to Man'yō Bunkakan Nishiguchi.
