Gods of Naramachi: Gangoji's Guardian Shrines and the Town's Deities

Gangoji · Hōrinkan · Nara · –

Around Naramachi, the town centred on Gangoji's former precinct, stand many shrines as well as temples. Many have histories as guardian shrines of Gangoji and share features such as the worship of goryō, spirits of the dead honoured as gods; neighbourhood shrines, meeting houses and temple grounds also honour deities such as Kōshin (Shōmen Kongō) and Inari, a faith close to everyday town life that continues today. Drawing on research into Naramachi's local history by the temple's cultural-property research institute, the exhibition looks at the history, beliefs and origin stories of these gods. The Important Cultural Property Chikō Mandala painted on wood (Kamakura period) is on special view during the run.
