The Surrealist Book: Tomorrow Lives in Mirrors
The Museum of Modern Art · New York · –
Presents artists' books made within the Surrealist movement, for which the book was an ideal vehicle for subversive experiment and for spreading the group's ideas. Anchored by the Helen and Sam Zell Collection, which came to MoMA in 2022 and is shown at the museum for the first time, it includes rare volumes by André Breton, Claude Cahun, Salvador Dalí, Paul Éluard, Max Ernst and Toyen from the 1920s into the postwar years. It also shows how, with the rise of fascism and war in the late 1930s and '40s, books circulated covertly as agents of resistance.
