Kasugataisha Museum

Nara Park · Nara

Address: 160 Kasugano-chō, Nara 630-8212 (Kasuga Taisha)

The museum of Kasuga Taisha holds and shows the shrine's cultural properties, chiefly its 354 National Treasures and 2,528 Important Cultural Properties. So many are Heian-period treasures that survive nowhere else that the shrine is called “the Shōsō-in of the Heian period”; courtly art, armour and swords appear in turn in themed special exhibitions. Visitors enter through Kamigaki, a space of water and light, and a hall shows one of Japan's largest dadaiko drums, 6.5 m high. The museum marks its tenth anniversary in 2026. By bus from JR or Kintetsu Nara Station to Kasuga Taisha Honden, 7–10 minutes; the museum is at the stop.
